What should we throw away?

I have decided it is probably not a good idea to throw away the future. Even though, sometimes, I wish I could throw Mondays out the window, I realize that we need all of our days. And yet with each plastic water bottle, with every a recently obsolete mobile phone, every plastic shopping bag, I feel like I am throwing time away, that I am letting the days that this sweet world will sustain us slide by. Time to turn back time and use the remainders.

Recycling is simple, it is just another step from the trash can to the recycling bin. It is a small step to helping the environment. Many people don’t know where to or what to recycle at home, but almost every town has a local recycling center and recycling collectors at a local super markets. It is a small step that can have a huge impact.

In our school (Main Street Middle School in Montpelier, VT) we devote some of our time to promoting recycling in our community. Recycling matters because it improves the environment and therefore our future. It does this by keeping recycling out of landfills and preventing new materials from being made. By recycling materials we can learn to take care of the environment.

Recycling at school is different from at home because we have recycling bins next to every trash can, and in every room, at school. Everything goes into one bin. At home, our recycling is out in the garage, and we need to take it to the recycling center every weekend, where we sort it into different bins.

I think the biggest benefit of recycling is that we can make new stuff with using new material. It saves energy, work, and money, and protects natural resources like trees, water, and minerals.

I think people try to do a good job of recycling, but they don’t always succeed. Sometimes they get lazy, sometimes they get confused when things are so different. I think what really works is to make recycling very easy to do, consistent everywhere, and to make it cheap to recycle, but expensive to throw things away.

Recycling would be better in my community if everyone did it. I don’t know why more people don’t recycle. Maybe if it cost lots of money to throw things away, and cost nothing to recycle, people would recycle more. It would also be better if people didn’t throw litter and recyclables on the ground.

My favorite thing to recycle is aluminum cans. I really like to drink soda and I think its really cool that every can can be turned into another can in as little as six weeks. Plus, no material is lost and its way cheaper to use recycled aluminum than to use fresh aluminum out of the ground.
